So now that CELSYS, the Japanese developer of Manga Studio, have released their own English version download of Clip Studio Paint what does this mean for Smith Micro and the future of Manga Studio? Will there be a Manga Studio 6? Will the next version of Clip Studio Paint replace it and will current Manga Studio 5 owners get an upgrade price? If we have neither program should we start with Clip Studio in anticipation of future updates not being supported via Manga Studio? Has anyone tried/compared the new English Clip Studio Paint Pro with Manga Studio?

I did specifically ask them if Smith Micro would be allowed to release versions in the future (ie Manga Studio 6) and as you can see they did not address that question. There really isn't much of a difference outside of the name. The main reason you'd want CSP over manga studio is because Celsys updates their software much more often then Smith Micro does with MS5. Both version use the same translation, considering Celsys is the one that does MS5's translations. Clip Studio Paint is technically not even Manga Studio 5.

Manga Studio (Called Comicstudio in Japan) is just what smith Micro called it. Illustudio was a 32bit illustration program with paint support. Comicstudio was a black and white inking program focused on creating manga.
It could do color but it's system for it was very rudimentary. Both programs have been discontinued. You can buy them still but they no longer update. Clip Studio has most of the functions from illustudio but with comicstudio's manga templates. (If you choose the EX version) Also Clip Studio is a 64 bit program.

I personally have been with the product since we localized it in 2005. In the last few years, we’ve helped cultivate the marketplace for Manga Studio. We brought attention to the product and reached out to manga, comic and digital artists. Recently, we were requested by Celsys to discontinue selling the digital version of Manga Studio 5 and 5 EX, so that Celsys can sell the digital version of Clip Studio Pro and EX. These are essentially the same applications except that they are branded differently.
Smith Micro will continue to sell the physical (packaged) version of Manga Studio 5 and 5 EX. We will continue providing updates of the product and will provide consistent technical support for the product.

Jqim3, my friend. The 'Ex' version is just a version in which you have more function than the 'Pro' version, like animating and manage multiple pages for your comics. Because the 'Ex' version cost more they reccomend you to buy the 'Pro' version if you're just an illustrator who want to draw and nothing else. If you want to make CSP your main workhorse and you are sure about that buy the 'Ex' version. If you just want to try the program buy the 'Pro' version and see how do you find yourself with the program.
